Player Spotlight: Derrick Favors (Atlanta Celtics)
Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:23

Derrick Favors continues to dominate the summer circuit. At the recently held adidas Nations workout in Los Angeles, the 6’9” power forward showed why he is the #1 big man in the class of 2009.  His arsenal of dunks and jump hooks, along with the occasional mid-range jumper, is complemented by an icy cool demeanor that, altogether, make Favors a college coach’s dream, and an opposing player’s nightmare.

Favors will have another opportunity to showcase his skills at the GBOA South tournament next weekend, June 28-29, when his Atlanta Celtics compete against the best the region has to offer.  Favors will have plenty of help from his friends.  The Celtics also have one of the elite prospects from the class of 2010 in Trae Golden, along with three other Rivals150 prospects for the class of 2009: Noel Johnson (#70), Andre Malone (#97), and Terrance Shannon (#115).  The Celtics are one of the top teams the South and should have a good chance to advance to the GBOA Challenge of Champions, to be held in Chicago on August 15-17.

The list of schools courting Favors is long and distinguished, and includes both national championship contenders from last season’s NCAA tournament, Kansas and Memphis.  While Favors has reportedly received offers from several top tier basketball programs, he will wait until the spring signing period in April 2009 to make a decision, according to Scouts, Inc.
