Today’s youth are facing new challenges and situations everyday, with temptations around every corner looking to steer them down the wrong path. There are few organizations that aim to ensure the future of these young athletes and New Heights is at the forefront to help guide student-athletes on the right path. GBOA along with New Heights believe in using basketball as the “hook” to emphasize education, community service and life lessons to better prepare these kids for life off the court.
New Heights Youth, Inc. founder Nate Blatchford founded the program back in 2001 with the Children’s Aid Society in response to the need for a rigorous athletic and academic program to bring kids together. With over 155 students currently enrolled from grades 6-12, New Heights is giving kids a chance to succeed by using the sport they love to play as a means to better themselves.
“The minute you get away from fundamentals – whether it’s proper technique, work ethic or mental preparation – the bottom falls out of your game, your school work, your job, whatever your doing.” Michael Jordan
The mission under which New Heights operates is to “inspire inner city youth to be leaders, champions and student-athletes and empower them to be successful in high school, college and life.” New Heights believes that learning occurs in the three C’s (court, classroom, community) and focuses on all three in its effort to make student-athletes positive and productive members of their communities.
“New Heights is one of few programs in New York City and probably New York State that offers a full comprehensive educational component”, Coach Rudy King of the 17u boys basketball team stated. “Kids get a chance to study for the SAT, Regents’, have individual tutoring sessions. It’s not just about basketball, it’s about the student-athlete”, he adds.
Transitioning from middle school to high school to college can be a rough process without guidance from individuals who genuinely want to help. College Bound is the core program offered by New Heights to help make this transition easier. In this program participants are required to partake in five areas: Basketball, Academic Resource Center (ARC), High School Assist, College Assist and Summer Academy. All these areas are aimed at building healthy habits, shaping identities through leadership, development & academic pursuits and making sure that every New Heights participant receives a high quality education.
GBOA applauds what the New Heights program is doing and agrees with their mantra that education is key and just knowing how to play basketball isn’t enough. Looking ahead to the Challenge of Champions tourney August 15-17 in Chicago, we look forward to see New Heights compete as they aim to take the title back to New York. |

Player Spotlight: John Henson (Franchize All-Stars) |
|
John Henson is finally reaping the benefits of all his hard work over the past few years. The 6’10 power forward from Round Rock, Texas made one of the biggest jumps in recent memory on the prospect rankings list. In late 2007, Henson was ranked #25 for the class of 2009 and now just a few months later in June, the power forward has skyrocketed into the top five. As a junior at Round Rock High School, Henson filled up the stat sheet averaging 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks per game. These impressive averages were enticing for many of the top college basketball programs. UCLA, Texas, Memphis, Arizona and USC were all interested in the power forward but Henson decided to commit to another perennial powerhouse. Henson kicked off the New Year in January by committing to the University of North Carolina. Henson will join the Tarheels in 2010 and become another part of the storied basketball program that has turned out more NBA players than any other program in the past ten years. With his big college decision off his back, Henson is now able to focus his attentions on his summer season. Henson plays with Franchize Al-Stars out of Houston, Texas and has had an impressive summer and spring thus far. The Franchize All-Stars will look to take home the GBOA South crown at the South region tournament in Atlanta, June 28 and 29. |

Player Spotlight: Hollis Thomspon (Belmont Shore) |
|

|
After graduation, Hollis Thompson will be packing his bags and moving clear across the country to start his college basketball career. Thompson, a Los Angeles native committed to Georgetown University; making his decision to become a Hoya back in November. His commitment to Georgetown has marked the fourth consecutive year the program has had at least one five star prospect in its recruiting class. As a junior Thompson averaged 19 points per game in addition to 11 rebounds and 3 assists for Loyola High School. Thompson was a prospect high on most recruiter’s lists, but eventually chose Georgetown over USC, UCLA and Duke. His athleticism and diverse skill set made him a perfect match for Georgetown’s offense. The same offense that played a major factor in the small forward’s decision to become a Hoya. "One thing I really like about Coach John Thompson is he doesn't recruit positions, he recruits players," Thompson told Rivals. "I like their offense with the motions and cutting, and lenience and flexibility. I am not going there to play one definite position; I'll have a chance to play the 'one' through the 'four.'” Thompson’s ability to play several positions helped Belmont Shore to the quarterfinals of the GBOA West tournament in early May and has given them a potential shot at earning a Wild Card bid for the Challenge of Champions, which takes place in Chicago in August. |
