An exciting battle is shaping up for the GBOA South tournament next weekend in Norcross, GA. The field already includes half of the top 10 players from the class of 2009, and will also provide a glimpse toward the future, with two of the top four point guards from the class of 2010 scheduled to be in attendance. One of those two is Brandon Knight from Team Breakdown. Knight still has two years of basketball left at Pine Crest High School in Fort Lauderdale, but colleges have already begun to pursue him. Currently, UConn, along with a host of ACC and SEC universities, including Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina, Florida, and Florida State, are all in the mix for Knight, and it may take a while before we see that list shorten significantly. Currently the #1 point guard in his class, Knight has an explosive first step and shoots well from beyond the arc. At 6’3,” his length makes it extremely difficult for smaller guards to defend against him. Knight is also an excellent passer, and possesses the athleticism to become a great defender. Knight's self-awareness and desire to improve only add to his promise. "I don't want to be a one-dimensional player. I want to be a scorer and do what it takes to score. But if the shot's not falling, you have to do other stuff or you're not capable of helping your team," Knight told Rivals.com. Knight helped lead Team Breakdown to a national championship in 2007 as a freshman, and has continued to dominate in 2008. Last month, Team Breakdown reached the finals at the Bob Gibbons tournament before being stunned by the Atlanta Celtics. Knight, along with backcourt-mate Kenny Boynton – the #10 prospect for 2009 – may have the opportunity to avenge the loss next weekend, as the Celtics have signed on to participate in the GBOA South tourney on June 28-29 as well. If they are to advance to the GBOA Challenge of Champions to be held in Chicago in August, then Team Breakdown will need the strong guard play from Knight and Boynton to which they have grown accustomed. |
