DeMarcus Cousins is a hometown kind of guy, that’s why one of the top ranked player in the class of 2009 decided to keep it in state when selecting which college he would attend after graduation. Cousins, a 6’9 center from Mobile, Alabama will be suiting up for coach Mike Davis’ University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers in 2009. After averaging 17 points per game to go with 8 rebounds and 2 blocks as a junior, Cousins committed to play at UAB in February. Cousins chose UAB over perennial powerhouses: Kentucky, Florida and IU. This may have surprised college basketball fans but Cousins made the decision not just based on the basketball program but rather the overall support he received from Davis and his staff. "Coach Davis was there for me when I was going through some bad times last year,” Cousins told Rivals. “Some coaches backed away and I didn't hear from them. For him (Davis) it's not just about basketball, he cares about me." Cousins will certainly end up being the highest profiled recruit in the history of the UAB basketball program as he is the #2 ranked center and 9th ranked player overall for the class of 2009. The center and his Birmingham Storm team will compete later this month in the GBOA South Regional Tournament in Atlanta. Cousins will get an opportunity to go head to head with some of the top players in the country including several of the players ranked above him, including: John Henson and Derrick Favors. |
