Frank Ocean, GQ magazine

You know you’ve made it when Jay Z and Kanye West are flying you across the country to collaborate and GQ names you one of their Men of the Year. Little did Frank Ocean know back in the day when he was struggling to make his first album that things would turn out like this. Ocean wrote this note explaining his current situation to his five-years-ago self:

Hey chris, your name is frank now..it’s a long story. your girlfriend is about to break up with you because of the long distance. it’s ok. & that job you’re working..well, you’re gonna have to work there for another year and some months.. & then you’re gonna get fired. you’re gonna work a couple more jobs after that too. nothing glamorous. kinkos and at&t if you really want the specifics. but you’re never gonna be homeless or starving. don’t worry you won’t fail and have to move back to new orleans either. you are gonna get your heartbroken though. twice. if it helps, the first one is gonna be worse than the second. contrary to how it feels, it won’t kill you. in fact it’s gonna help you write an album. yea, you finally finished an album. people like it man. you’re actually gonna write and record hundreds of songs. they won’t all be good and most ppl won’t think you’re talented at first, but you’re going to master your gifts. you’re going to become a lot stronger and wiser..even a little taller. be patient. i mean, you kind of have no choice. and be good to people. i don’t wanna spoil too much for you, but.. you’re on a plane right now to the east coast to work with kanye west & jay-z. it’s all working out kid. you made it.

Now Hova and Yeezy are giving him advice on music and sneakers…

All I Really Want (Rick Ross song)

Following recent health scares, Rick Ross gave an interview to Billboard Magazine where he recognizes the role of Jay Z in leading a generation of artists and giving them a framework for the come up.  In Ross’ words:

“I’ve most definitely been a fan of Hov and his whole movement. He gave a blueprint to a lot of young entrepreneurs…”

It’s easy to forget that Hov went from putting out mixtapes to becoming one of the biggest entertainment moguls this side of Russell Simmons with record labels, clothing lines, a basketball team and club chain under his wing.  The fact that he manages an empire daily while touring and working on material for a new album is mind-boggling in some ways.

In a recent interview, Ocean mentioned that Kanye offered to guest on his forthcoming album but Ocean declined telling ‘Ye that he wanted to do his first album on his own.

kanye west, Nietzsche

One can’t help but wonder if philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is turning in his grave right now as he realizes that Kanye West’s Stronger is derived from his maxim, “that which does not kill us makes us stronger,” but Virginia-based songwriter Vincent Peters has helped shed light on that fact with his recent lawsuit. Peters also wrote a track called Stronger based on the quote and claims that ‘Ye stole his song, hilariously citing that they both rhymed “stronger” with “longer,” and, coincidentally, they both reference supermodel Kate Moss. Though the Kate Moss reference is bizarre, Peters doesn’t have a leg to stand on in the face of this:

Jay Z’s Rocawear was set to release a line of t-shirts that brazenly displayed the phrase “Occupy All Streets” in an effort to cash in on the Occupy movement that is sweeping the world.  With no mention of profit sharing with the protesters, Hov was savaged by activists and the press for what seemed like an insensitive and cynical ploy.  Since then all mention of the shirts has been removed from the Rocawear website and a search for the phrase only returns the tongue-in-cheek “Did you mean ‘lockup ball street’”.

CORRECTION: Occupy All Streets shirts are back on sale.

Watch the Throne‘s latest single Ni**as in Paris features the now ubiquitous sample from the film Blades of Glory where Will Ferrell’s character says:

“No one knows what it means, but it’s provocative… it gets the people going!”

Ferrell reported that he was flattered when Kanye West approached him about using the quote and is now immortalized on the classic track.

Before The Throne show at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, executives from Island Def Jam records were on hand backstage to award Jay Z and Kanye West with platinum plaques for unheard-of-in-this-age sales of their now legendary Watch the Throne. Russell Simmons and Fabolous were there to celebrate and Hov and Yeezy predictably went on to rock the house.

Jay Z and Rihanna go way back to the massive hit Umbrella and have a history since of paths crossing (do you remember a little song called Run This Town?). Now one of Rihanna’s producers let it slide that Jay will be the only guest artist featured on Rihanna’s upcoming release Talk that Talk. We have a feeling Jigga had a little something to do with Ri-Ri’s recent Coldplay collab as well.
